In Inner Wheel Club of Flin Flon, Manitoba, was chartered on May 23rd. 1992 with 33 ladies signing. Of our 23 current members, 8 are Charter members.
We continue to enjoy a dinner meeting, once every month, except for July and August. Our activities are varied—many including the Rotary Club of Flin Flon and their service projects. Our work is in giving donations. Please see features about our many activities below. |

More Blueberry Jam
Last year the Flin Flon Arts Council asked for our help at this new Festival, now titled the 'Flin Flon Blueberry Jam Music Gathering'. They didn’t ask us to sing (though they didn’t stop us from doing so, either!). We prepared and served food—with the help of many Rotarians—to a crowd that was estimated at 1,500 people. No-one knew what to expect going in, but we will be much better prepared in August, when BBJ (#bbjrocks) kicks off its second year. In 2018, we served fish and chips, burgers, hot dogs and smokies and literally ran out of food at 8:00 PM on Saturday (we replenished for Sunday!) Local Activities
The Rotary Seniors Christmas Party sees all of our Inner Wheel members involved, starting with the making of 300 Christmas-themed corsages for the guests. Our Car Boot Sale
The Flin Flon Inner Wheel Car Boot Sale—our big annual fundraiser—is held each year on the second Saturday in June. It is based on a British tradition of selling wares out of car boots (trunks), similar to a Canadian Garage Sale. Our Club takes over the parking lot of the Victoria Inn North Hotel in Flin Flon and ‘rents’ space to local people who load up their cars with treasures and sell them to the citizens. Our Flin Flon Inner Wheel Club supplies tables to each vendor to display their stock and always has five or six tables for our members, to raise funds for the Club. We also set up a cafe area with picnic tables and sun shades where patrons can rest and have lunch with world-famous ‘Rotary Fries’, prepared by the members of our Flin Flon Rotary Club; burgers and soft drinks. More Fish!
The Flin Flon Inner Wheel Club opened the Food Concession for the 5th year of the Rotary Flinty Fishing Derby held on 7th April 2019. Members served up hot chocolate, coffee, hamburgers, smokies and hot dogs for all 450 plus fishers. The food was cooked and served in a big circus tent in the middle of the frozen Lake Athapapuskow—on ice that was 30 inches thick. Food was delivered to the fishers by members of the Junior Nordic Ski Team and Aqua Doves and Aqua Jets swimming clubs on specially-made sleds made by Rotarian George Fontaine. Our members cooked all the food on BBQ’s and made and served hot chocolate on a stormy, snowy, windy day—with smiles on our faces—to put money in our Club’s bank account. This has also become one our big fundraisers. We do receive help from the Flin Flon Rotary Club in setting up and some faithful friends help us pull this event off. More Christmas!
Each year, the Rotary Club of Flin Flon hosts a Christmas Party for Seniors in our community. They bring invitees from local Seniors Care homes in wheelchair accessible buses and everyone over age 65 in Flin Flon is encouraged to attend. The Inner Wheel Club prepares luncheon/tea sandwiches and dainties for the 350+ guests and the Flin Flon Junior Bombers Hockey Club (SJHL) players ‘assist’ by serving the guests. Photo courtesy of Elly Spencer. Several local musicians lend their talents to the afternoon to entertain and Santa Claus arrives with a gift for everyone in attendance. The afternoon is capped by the Flin Flon Community Choir under the direction of Crystal Kolt OM and member of Flin Flon Inner Wheel singing Christmas carols, usually joined by the hockey players and the Rotary Club. All of our Christmas activities are how we give back to our Flin Flon community every year. Local Donations We continue to donate to families with medical emergencies or with ongoing serious medical conditions. Annually we: • give money to the local food bank • give a bursary for a Grade XII graduating student • donate to the Aqua Centre revitalization committee • make a donation to the Flin Flon Public Library • provide a hamper to a deserving family at Christmas • contribute gifts to the Healthy Flin Flon teenagers gift program • make donations to various worthwhile causes as the need arises. As well, we make donations to countries in times of natural disasters and also maintain our pledges to International Inner Wheel. |

District Activities
In 2019, the Flin Flon Inner Wheel Club represented our International Inner Wheel District with our annual District fundraiser, a Gourmet Basket raffled at the Rotary 5550 Conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Flin Flon's own Dona O'Brien brought the Basket to Winnipeg and hosted the raffle ticket table, shown here with Margaret Peters, buying tickets. |
